Dr. Robert Morales, MD, PA Family Medicine
Kingsville, Texas

SolkaNavaTorno, LLC explored a combination of various elements associated with Spanish style architecture for the design of this health clinic.  This style of architecture is prevalent in Kingsville, so it is a good fit for this clinic.  The single-story clinic boasts a tall-volume “tower” that accentuates the entrance and provides a unique waiting room space for patients.  Sheet metal roof material was selected as an economical alternative to clay tile.  Window locations were chosen carefully to provide natural light in the waiting rooms, offices and staff break room.  The exterior wall finish is cement plaster (stucco) with ceramic tile accents.

Interior finishes were selected based on a warm, residential palette.  They consist of vinyl plank flooring with a wood grain look in the waiting room and offices, painted gypsum board walls and acoustical suspended ceilings.  Doors are all residential style, commercial-grade solid wood with painted wood trim.  In the waiting areas the ceilings are accented with faux wood beams and linear striated ceiling tiles to emulate painted wood plank ceilings.

The overall building mass is simple and functional.  Space adjacencies are important with regard to the function of the Doctor’s daily routine.  Staff interaction with patients and each other is another important factor in the interior layout of spaces.  Security for the staff and privacy for the patients is paramount.

HVAC mechanical systems are centralized on a mezzanine level above the nurse’s station in the attic with an oversized access ladder for maintenance.
